Breaking the Silence on Domestic Violence: Understanding the Numbers, Impact, and Local Support

Released: 10/12/2026

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Carlisle Medical is dedicated to breaking the silence and raising public awareness for those affected by domestic violence.

Abuse can come in many forms—physical, emotional, sexual, financial, and technology-facilitated. Knowing how to identify these different kinds of abuse can help you safely respond to situations. Domestic violence incidents can affect every person within a home and could have long-lasting effects on children’s emotional well-being, relationships, and sense of safety.

According to National Domestic Violence Hotline, approximately 1.2 million people contact the Hotline for help every year. The Hotline also reports that approximately 25% of women and 17% of men will experience some form of domestic violence in their lifetime. These numbers highlight the widespread impact of domestic violence and the importance of awareness, education, and access to resources.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline has provided support and resources for survivors around the world for over 30 years. The organization offers confidential assistance and connects individuals with resources that can help them navigate their situation.

Penelope House, a local organization, is also honoring and advocating for those who have “danced through the storm”. Founded in 1979, Mobile’s Penelope House has been a haven for countless women and children. The organization provides shelter, counseling, advocacy, and other resources to help individuals and families move toward safety and independence. As part of its Domestic Violence Awareness Month efforts, Penelope House sold purple tutus at Penelope’s Closet, located on Old Shell Road. All proceeds benefited the organization, supporting its mission and programs. World Tutu Day will be celebrated on February 2, 2027, offering another opportunity to raise awareness and show support for the cause.

Supporting local organizations such as Penelope House is one way community members can help raise awareness and advocate for domestic violence survivors.

It’s also important to know that the healing process can look different for everyone, and it can be a challenging journey for survivors; however, there are ways to show support.

  • Educate Yourself and Others
  • Listen Without Judgment
  • Encourage Professional Support
  • Raise Awareness and Advocate for Change

By learning the warning signs, supporting survivors, and connecting them with trusted resources, we can help create a community where they feel safe seeking help and support.
