Every workers’ compensation claim is unique and shaped by a variety of factors, including demographics, injury severity, treatment, and recovery. These factors can significantly influence how a claim progresses from the initial injury through resolution.

According to the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI), age, wages, gender, and overall health, along with comorbidities, are key drivers of claim complexity, cost, and duration. NCCI also found that claim milestones, such as treatment patterns and recovery timelines, can vary between women and men depending on the type of injury.

Research further shows that delays in beginning physical therapy or undergoing major surgery are associated with higher medical utilization. In addition, claims involving permanent disability generally take nearly twice as long to close as those involving temporary disability, highlighting the impact injury severity can have on the overall claim lifecycle.

NCCI notes that claim closure timelines can be influenced by carrier practices, attorney involvement, and the injured worker’s state of mind. Understanding these influences can help employers, carriers, and claims professionals better manage claims and support more efficient recovery outcomes.
